An Expat Talks about Moving to Boulder, Colorado

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Boulder

Name three things that you wish you had brought and three you wish you had left at home.

Wish I had brought: 1. Duvets ("comforters" are a poor substitute!), 2. More clothes (Tommy Hilfiger vs. Ted Baker? No contest!, 3. Rizlas ($1 per pack!!?!?!?).

Wish I had left behind: nothing springs to mind.

What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?

I don't think there are any really *bad* neighbourhoods, but they do have quite different demographics, from the studenty area around University Hill to the nouveau riche snobbishness of Devil's Thumb. Rent to sample before you buy (if only I had...)

What type of housing do you live in? Is this typical for most expats in your area?

Single family home (i.e. detached house). Typical for families.

How did you choose your neighborhood and find your home or apartment?

Assisted by company.

Are your housing costs higher or lower than they were in your home country? What is the average cost of housing there?

About 50% plus higher. And the entry level stuff is, er, lacking in charm. 3 bed ranch will set you back $300-500,000.
