Short-term Stay (up to 185 days)

Foreigners from the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) can drive in Portugal using their valid driver's license issued by their home country.

Non-EU/EEA citizens can use their valid driver's license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP).

Long-term Stay (over 185 days)

Foreigners living in Portugal for more than 185 days must obtain a Portuguese driver's license. The process is as follows:

• Obtain a residence permit from the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF).
• Register as a resident with the local municipal council to get a resident certificate.
• Schedule a medical examination at a certified center or clinic.
• Gather the required documents:
  • Valid identification (passport or residence permit).
  • Resident certificate.
  • Medical certificate.
  • Valid driver's license from the home country (if applicable).
  • Tax identification number (NIF) from the Portuguese Tax Authority.
  • Two passport-sized photographs.

• Pay the applicable fee.
• Take the theoretical and practical driving tests (if required).
