Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Italy.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Italy.

Requirements for a Foreigner to Legally Drive in Italy

Foreigners can drive in Italy with their home country's driver's license for up to one year, provided that the license is valid and accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP) if the license is not in Italian or English. After one year, they must obtain an Italian driver's license (Patente di Guida). The requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region.

Process for Obtaining an Italian Driver's License

The process for obtaining an Italian driver's license involves several steps. Here is an organized list of the process:

  • Translation of Current License: Have your current driver's license officially translated into Italian. This can be done at a certified translation agency or at the consulate of your home country.
  • Medical Certificate: Obtain a medical certificate (Certificato Medico) from a doctor registered with the Italian Ministry of Transport or from a public health clinic (ASL). This certificate confirms that you are physically and mentally fit to drive.
  • Application Form: Fill out the application form (Modulo TT 2112) for the Italian driver's license. This form is available at provincial Motorizzazione Civile offices, some post offices, and driving schools.
  • Photographs: Prepare two recent passport-sized photographs, one of which must be authenticated by the issuing office (usually the comune or municipality where you are registered as a resident).
  • Tax Stamps: Purchase two tax stamps (marche da bollo) with a value of €16 each. These are available at tobacco shops (tabaccherie) or some post offices.
  • Submit Application: Submit your application at the Motorizzazione Civile office in your province. You will need to present your translated license, medical certificate, application form, photographs, tax stamps, and a valid identification document.
  • Theory Exam: If required, take the theory exam (Esame di Teoria). The exam covers Italian traffic rules and can be taken in Italian or with the assistance of a translator. Driving schools can help prepare for this exam.
  • Practical Exam: If required, take the practical driving exam (Esame di Guida). This exam must be taken with a registered driving school. The examiner will evaluate your driving skills during a test drive.
  • Issuance of License: Once you have passed the necessary exams, your Italian driver's license will be issued and sent to your registered address.

It is recommended to enroll in a driving school (Autoscuola) to help with the application process and to prepare for the theory and practical exams.
