Moving for work, but having a "break" first.

Hi,
While I'm not new to working/living abroad (6 years in Asia) I got no idea where to start living/working in the US (New York to be more specific). I'm South African for what it matter.

In a nutshell, I'm a professional software developer with over 10 years experience (according to a quick job search I won't be having issues finding a job).
My wife is a qualified accountant, currently studying for her masters (btw, I don't know if they are "big" on this in the US, but I do not hold a degree. Several Microsoft Certifications and awards, I do have though).

While we want to move to the US with the purpose of living / working there, we was hoping it would be possible to first spend a month or two exploring the surrounding areas (we are keen travelers) before start looking for work.

From my initial searches it seems the above is not possible (you first need a job offer and that company need to "sponsor" you?)
Figured it won't hurt asking here. :-)
Thanks in advance!
