What advice do you have for expats having a baby in San Pedro?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in San Pedro about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Belize. While there are hospitals and clinics in San Pedro, the facilities may not be as advanced as those in your home country. Therefore, it's crucial to have a comprehensive health insurance plan that covers maternity care and potential emergencies. Secondly, consider hiring a local doula or midwife who can guide you through the process and provide personalized care. They can also help you navigate the local healthcare system and communicate with medical professionals. Thirdly, make sure to have a plan for any potential emergencies. This could involve knowing the quickest route to the nearest hospital or having a plan for medical evacuation if necessary. Fourthly, it's important to understand the cultural norms and expectations around childbirth in Belize. This can help you feel more comfortable and prepared for the experience. Fifthly, consider the language barrier. If you're not fluent in English or Spanish, the main languages spoken in Belize, it might be helpful to have a translator or someone who can communicate effectively with the healthcare providers. Lastly, make sure to take care of your mental health. Living abroad can be stressful, and having a baby adds another layer of complexity. Seek out support groups or counseling services if needed, and make sure to take time for self-care," remarked another expat who made the move to San Pedro, Belize.
