What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Nuremberg?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Nuremberg about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the German healthcare system. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by statutory health insurance in Germany, so make sure you have the necessary coverage. Secondly, find a good gynecologist (Frauenarzt) who speaks your language or English, as they will be your primary healthcare provider throughout your pregnancy. Thirdly, consider hiring a midwife (Hebamme) for additional support during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care. Midwives in Germany play a crucial role and their services are also covered by health insurance. Fourthly, start looking for a hospital or birthing center early. Nuremberg has several hospitals with maternity wards. Take a tour and ask about their birthing options and facilities. Fifthly, attend prenatal classes. They are a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and to meet other expectant parents. Sixthly, understand the parental leave and benefits system in Germany. Germany has generous maternity and paternity leave policies, and you may be eligible for parental allowance (Elterngeld). Lastly, if you're not fluent in German, consider finding a translator for your hospital stay. While many doctors and nurses speak English, not all hospital staff may be able to communicate effectively in English. Remember, every pregnancy and birth is unique. Don't hesitate to ask questions and seek the care and support you need," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Nuremberg, Germany.
