What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Marseille?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Marseille about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the French healthcare system, which is one of the best in the world. Pregnant women in France are well cared for, with regular check-ups and ultrasounds as standard. Ensure you have the right health insurance. If you're working in France, you'll be covered by the French social security system, which covers most of the costs related to pregnancy and childbirth. Find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language, as this will make the process much easier. Many doctors in France speak English, but it's not a guarantee. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach who can provide additional support and guidance throughout the pregnancy and during labor. Take advantage of the maternity services offered by the French government. This includes prenatal classes and postnatal support, such as help with breastfeeding and baby care. Prepare for the paperwork. France is known for its bureaucracy, and having a baby is no exception. You'll need to declare your pregnancy to the French social security and family allowance office, and register the birth at the local town hall within three days. Finally, embrace the French approach to childbirth, which tends to be more medicalized than in some other countries. Epidurals are common, and home births are rare. However, the care is excellent and the maternal and infant mortality rates are very low," explained one expat living in Marseille, France.
