What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Sendai?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Sendai about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Japan. Prenatal care is highly valued and regular check-ups are encouraged. You may need to find an English-speaking doctor if you're not fluent in Japanese. Secondly, understand that the birthing process may be different from what you're used to in your home country. For instance, epidurals are not commonly used in Japan, and fathers may not be allowed in the delivery room in some hospitals. Thirdly, make sure to register your baby's birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure they receive citizenship. Fourthly, consider joining local parenting groups or expat communities in Sendai. They can provide valuable advice and support, as well as help you navigate cultural differences. Fifthly, be aware that Japan has a different approach to postnatal care. Mothers are often encouraged to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth for rest and recovery. Lastly, remember to respect and understand Japanese customs and traditions related to childbirth and child-rearing. This will not only help you integrate better into the society but also enrich your own parenting experience," remarked another expat who made the move to Sendai, Japan.
