What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Ito?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Ito about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Secondly, you should find a hospital or clinic that you feel comfortable with. Some hospitals in Japan may not have English-speaking staff, so you may want to find one that does or consider hiring a translator. Thirdly, prenatal care in Japan is quite thorough and you will have regular check-ups throughout your pregnancy. Make sure to keep all your appointments. Fourthly, understand that the birthing process may be different than what you're used to. For example, epidurals are not commonly used in Japan. Fifthly, after the baby is born, there are certain procedures and paperwork that need to be completed. This includes registering the birth at your local city hall and at your embassy if you want your child to have citizenship of your home country. Sixthly, Japan has a system of regular health checks for babies and children, so make sure to follow this schedule. Lastly, consider joining local parent groups or expat groups. They can provide support and advice, and help you navigate the challenges of raising a child in a foreign country," remarked another expat who made the move to Japan.
