What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Shimoda?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Shimoda about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Secondly, find a hospital or clinic that you are comfortable with. Some hospitals in Japan may not have English-speaking staff, so you may want to find one that does or consider hiring a translator. Thirdly, prenatal care is very important in Japan. Regular check-ups are expected and there are certain tests and scans that are standard. Make sure you understand what these are and when they should be done. Fourthly, understand the cultural differences. In Japan, it's common for the mother to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth, which is different from many Western countries. Fifthly, be aware that there may be different customs and traditions surrounding childbirth in Japan. For example, it's traditional for the mother and baby to rest and recover at home for a month after the birth. Lastly, make sure you understand the legal requirements. You will need to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate, as well as with the local government in Japan. Remember, it's always a good idea to seek advice from other expats who have had a baby in Japan, as they can provide valuable insights and tips," said another expat in Shimoda, Japan.
