What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Nijmegen?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Nijmegen about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to understand that the Dutch healthcare system is quite different from other countries, so familiarize yourself with the system and ensure you have the necessary health insurance coverage. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or midwife, as they are commonly used in the Netherlands for prenatal care and childbirth. They can provide valuable support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during labor. Thirdly, start looking for a suitable hospital or birthing center in Nijmegen early in your pregnancy. Some popular options include Radboud University Medical Center and Canisius-Wilhelmina Hospital. Fourthly, prenatal classes are highly recommended. They can help you understand the birthing process in the Netherlands, teach you relaxation techniques, and provide an opportunity to meet other expectant parents. Fifthly, if you don't speak Dutch, look for English-speaking doctors and midwives. Many healthcare professionals in the Netherlands speak English, but it's important to confirm this to ensure clear communication. Sixthly, be aware that home births are quite common in the Netherlands. If you're comfortable with the idea, this could be an option for you. Seventhly, make sure to register your baby's birth at the local municipality (gemeente) within three days of the birth. Both parents do not need to be present for the registration, but you will need to bring certain documents. Lastly, take advantage of the kraamzorg, a unique postnatal care system in the Netherlands. A kraamzorg nurse will visit your home for eight to ten days after the birth to help with the baby and provide advice on baby care, breastfeeding, and recovery for the mother," said another expat in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
