What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Eindhoven?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Eindhoven about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"To contact me as I now help ladies in the greater Eindhoven area with a consult of 2 hours to explain about "Having a baby in the Netherlands". The correct info is vital to having a positive birth! There is a super doula and a super childbirth educator too," explained one expat living in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

"Firstly, it's important to understand that the healthcare system in the Netherlands is of high quality and very accessible. However, it's crucial to have health insurance, as it's mandatory for everyone living in the country. When you find out you're pregnant, the first step is to make an appointment with a midwife, who will be your primary care provider throughout your pregnancy. Midwives in the Netherlands are highly trained and can handle most pregnancies without the need for a doctor. You should also consider taking prenatal classes, which are often offered in English. These classes can help you understand the Dutch healthcare system, what to expect during labor and delivery, and how to care for your newborn. If you prefer to give birth in a hospital, you should know that unless there's a medical necessity, home births are quite common in the Netherlands. Discuss your birth plan with your midwife early on. Breastfeeding is highly encouraged in the Netherlands, and there are many resources available to help new mothers, including lactation consultants and breastfeeding support groups. Registering your baby's birth is a must. You need to do this at the local municipality within three days of the birth. If you're not married, the father or second parent will need to acknowledge paternity before the birth. Lastly, remember to enjoy this special time. The Netherlands is a great place to raise children, with a strong emphasis on family life and a high standard of living," said another expat in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
