What's the deal? She asks me to give her son my last name at the notary public

I'm 67, she's 50, we're happy together. But she has children including a 10- year-old. Lately she's been dropping hints, asking me really, to visit the local notary public so I can give her boy my last name. Never understood why. Moreover, a notary and not a lawyer? WTF? I thought maybe it was a sentimental gesture, seeking a tangible expression of commitment. (We'd discussed getting a civil union in 2 years, time it takes, otherwise my past is complicated (I'd have go produce 5 divorce docs from the US to satisfy City Hall here.) Then she actually revved up her motorbike and said, OK, let's pay the notary a visit. I'd ask for explanation, Why is it so necessary? Who cares if he has my last name? He's got enough last names as is, one more won't make a difference. Then a gringo friend suggested a more mercenary motive: I would be LEGALLY ADOPTING the kid, with all kinds of legal and financial obligations attached until he reaches adulthood. People use notaries in ADOPTIONS? Why not divorces then, and anything else. Makes no sense except I certainly don't want the legal responsibility for a 10 year old. This is a new one for me. I've heard what I thought were all the lines, but not this. Anyone can shed any light on this? (BTW, we genuinely love each other, but every so often I get asked for wha I consider to be outrageous things--of anyone, anywhere. I've heard of he cultural divide, certainly. This one's more like an abyss.
