What is it like to retire in Tihany?

"Life for a retiree in Tihany can be quite peaceful and culturally enriching. Tihany is a small village located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, offering a serene environment with beautiful landscapes, perfect for those who enjoy nature and outdoor activities. The village is famous for its lavender fields, vineyards, and the Tihany Abbey, a Benedictine monastery which is a major cultural attraction. While Tihany may not have a large expat community due to its small size, larger cities nearby such as Budapest have a significant expat population. Retirees can connect with fellow expats through various social groups and events. Cultural attractions in and around Tihany are plentiful. Besides the Tihany Abbey, there are several museums, art galleries, and historical sites to explore. The village is also known for its traditional pottery, and retirees can even take pottery classes. Recreational activities are abundant in Tihany. The village is surrounded by nature reserves, offering opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and cycling. Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, provides a venue for water sports such as sailing, fishing, and swimming. There are also several golf courses in the vicinity. Nightlife in Tihany is more low-key compared to larger cities. However, there are a few cozy bars and restaurants where retirees can enjoy local wines and cuisine. During the summer, the village hosts various festivals and concerts, adding a bit of excitement to the otherwise tranquil atmosphere. In conclusion, Tihany offers a peaceful and culturally rich retirement life. It may not have a bustling expat community or a vibrant nightlife, but it makes up for it with its natural beauty, recreational activities, and cultural attractions," explained one retiree living in Tihany.
