What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Thun?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Thun about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Swiss healthcare system, which is high-quality but can be expensive. Make sure you have a good health insurance plan that covers maternity care and childbirth. Secondly, start looking for a gynecologist or a midwife as soon as you find out you're pregnant. In Switzerland, you have the choice of giving birth in a hospital, a birth house, or at home, so explore all these options and decide what's best for you. Thirdly, consider taking prenatal classes. They can be a great way to prepare for childbirth and to meet other expectant parents in Thun. Fourthly, learn about the maternity and paternity leave policies in Switzerland. The country has generous parental leave policies, so make sure you understand your rights. Fifthly, if you're not fluent in German (the main language spoken in Thun), you might want to find an English-speaking doctor and midwife. Sixthly, be prepared for the cost. Having a baby in Switzerland can be expensive, even with insurance. Lastly, make sure to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure your child's citizenship rights. Also, remember to register the birth with the local Swiss authorities. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," remarked another expat who made the move to Thun, Switzerland.
