What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Fribourg?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Fribourg about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to understand that healthcare in Switzerland is of a high standard, but it is also expensive. Make sure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Secondly, familiarize yourself with the Swiss healthcare system. In Switzerland, prenatal care is typically provided by a gynecologist, and you have the option to give birth in a hospital, a birthing center, or at home. Thirdly, start looking for a pediatrician early. Pediatricians can be in high demand in some areas, so it's a good idea to start your search well before your baby is due. Fourthly, consider hiring a doula or a midwife. They can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Fifthly, take advantage of prenatal classes. Many hospitals offer classes that cover topics like childbirth, breastfeeding, and newborn care. Sixthly, if you're not fluent in French or German (the main languages spoken in Fribourg), you might want to look for healthcare providers who speak your language. Seventhly, be aware that Swiss law requires you to register your baby's birth within three days. Lastly, connect with other expat parents. They can offer advice, support, and friendship, which can be especially valuable if you're far from your family and friends," said a member in Fribourg, Switzerland.
