What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Edinburgh?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Edinburgh about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to register with a local GP (General Practitioner) as soon as you know you're pregnant. The GP will be your first point of contact for all your prenatal care and will refer you to a midwife or obstetrician. Scotland's healthcare system, the NHS, provides free healthcare, including prenatal and postnatal care, to all residents. However, it's worth checking your eligibility as an expat. Edinburgh has several excellent hospitals with maternity units, including the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Western General Hospital. Research each one to find the best fit for your needs and preferences. Consider taking prenatal classes. These are often offered by hospitals or local community centres and can provide valuable information about pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care. Scotland has a strong emphasis on breastfeeding, with many resources available to support new mothers. If you choose to breastfeed, you'll find plenty of support and advice available. If you're working in Scotland, you may be eligible for Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance. Check the UK government's website for more information on maternity rights and benefits. Scotland has a Baby Box program, which provides a box of essential items for newborns to all new parents. Register for this through your midwife. Finally, try to connect with other expat parents in Edinburgh. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific resources or services," wrote a member who made the move to Edinburgh, Scotland.
