What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Arcachon?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Arcachon about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the French healthcare system, which is one of the best in the world. Pregnant women in France are well cared for, with regular check-ups and ultrasounds as standard. Ensure you have the right health insurance. If you're working in France, you'll be automatically enrolled into the French healthcare system. If not, you may need to take out private health insurance. Learn some French medical vocabulary. While many doctors and nurses speak English, not all medical staff will be fluent. Knowing some basic terms can be very helpful. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who speaks your native language. This can be a great source of support and comfort during your pregnancy and birth. Research and visit local hospitals or birthing centers in Arcachon to find one where you feel comfortable. Understand the French maternity leave policies. France has very generous maternity leave policies, so make sure you know your rights. Join local expat or parenting groups. This can be a great way to get advice and support from people who have been through the same experience. Remember that the French approach to childbirth may be different from what you're used to. For example, epidurals are very common in France, and home births are rare. Finally, enjoy this special time. Having a baby in a foreign country can be a wonderful adventure, and the French Riviera is a beautiful place to start your journey into parenthood," commented one expat who made the move to Arcachon, France.
