What do I need to know about living in Saint-Malo?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Saint-Malo, they said:

"Before retiring in Saint-Malo, expats should know that the city is a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer, which can lead to crowded streets and higher prices. The cost of living can be higher than in other parts of France due to its coastal location and popularity. Expats should also be aware that while many locals speak English, particularly in the tourism industry, it is beneficial to learn French to fully integrate into the community and daily life. Healthcare in France is of a high standard, but it's important to understand how the system works and to ensure you have adequate health insurance. The climate in Saint-Malo is oceanic, with mild winters and cool summers, which may be a change for those used to hotter climates. The city is rich in history and culture, with many festivals and events throughout the year, providing plenty of opportunities for socializing and entertainment. Public transportation is reliable and efficient, but having a car can be useful for exploring the surrounding countryside and other parts of Brittany. French bureaucracy can be complex and time-consuming, so patience and persistence are often required when dealing with administrative tasks. Finally, it's important to understand the French tax system, as France has a tax treaty with many countries to avoid double taxation, but it's advisable to seek professional advice to ensure you understand your tax obligations," commented one expat who made the move to Saint-Malo.
