What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Portovenere?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Portovenere about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Italian healthcare system. Italy has a high standard of healthcare and all residents, including expats, have access to it. However, private healthcare is also available and might be more comfortable for expats. Secondly, you should find a good gynecologist and pediatrician who can speak your language. This will make your appointments and the birth process much easier. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during the birth. Fourthly, it's important to understand the maternity leave policies in Italy. If you are working, you are entitled to maternity leave, which is usually five months. Fifthly, make sure to register the birth with both the local Italian authorities and your home country's embassy or consulate. This will ensure that your child has citizenship rights in both countries. Lastly, try to immerse yourself in the local culture and community. This can provide a great support network and can also help you to understand and navigate the Italian healthcare system," wrote a member who made the move to Portovenere, Italy.
