What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Sapporo?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Sapporo about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Japan. Prenatal care is highly valued and regular check-ups are expected. You may need to find an English-speaking doctor or midwife if you're not fluent in Japanese. Secondly, consider joining local expat groups or online forums. They can provide invaluable advice and support, as well as help you navigate cultural differences and expectations around childbirth in Japan. Thirdly, understand that the Japanese healthcare system may have different practices and attitudes towards childbirth than what you're used to. For example, epidurals are less common and there may be more emphasis on natural childbirth. Fourthly, make sure you understand the costs involved. While healthcare in Japan is generally affordable, it's important to check what is covered by insurance and what you'll need to pay out of pocket. Fifthly, plan ahead for your hospital stay. Japanese hospitals often require longer stays after childbirth than hospitals in other countries. You may also need to bring your own items such as toiletries and clothes for the baby. Lastly, after the baby is born, you'll need to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure your child's citizenship rights. You'll also need to register the birth with the local Japanese authorities. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a rewarding one," wrote a member who made the move to Sapporo, Japan.
