What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Nagoya?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Nagoya about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Secondly, find a hospital or clinic that suits your needs. Some hospitals in Nagoya have English-speaking staff, which can be very helpful if you're not fluent in Japanese. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and childbirth. They can also help bridge any language or cultural gaps. Fourthly, understand the cultural differences. In Japan, it's common for mothers to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth, which is different from many Western countries. Fifthly, be prepared for the paperwork. Japan has a lot of bureaucracy, and you'll need to register your baby's birth at the local city hall within 14 days. Lastly, take advantage of the local support networks. There are many groups and organizations in Nagoya that offer support and resources for expat parents. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," said a member in Nagoya, Japan.
