What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Osaka?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Osaka about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Secondly, you should find a hospital or clinic that you feel comfortable with. Some hospitals in Osaka have English-speaking staff, which can be very helpful if you're not fluent in Japanese. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and childbirth. They can also help bridge any language or cultural gaps. Fourthly, be aware that prenatal and postnatal practices may differ from those in your home country. For example, it's common in Japan for mothers to stay in the hospital for several days after giving birth, and there's a strong emphasis on postnatal care. Fifthly, make sure to register your baby's birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure they receive citizenship. Lastly, try to connect with other expat parents in Osaka. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific doctors or services," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Osaka, Japan.
