What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Sintra?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Sintra about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Portuguese healthcare system. Portugal has a high standard of healthcare, with both public and private options available. Ensure that you have the necessary health insurance coverage. If you are employed in Portugal, you will be covered by the national health service. However, if you are not, you may need to arrange private health insurance. Find a good local doctor or midwife who speaks your language. This will make your prenatal appointments and the birth itself much easier to navigate. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during labor. Start looking into maternity hospitals or birthing centers in Sintra and decide where you would like to give birth. It's a good idea to visit a few to get a feel for where you will be most comfortable. Take prenatal classes if they are available. These can be a great way to prepare for the birth and to meet other expectant parents. Ensure that you understand the legal requirements for registering the birth in Portugal. You will need to register the birth within 20 days at the local civil registry office. Finally, try to embrace the local culture and traditions surrounding birth and parenting. This can be a wonderful way to feel more at home in your new country and to give your child a rich cultural heritage," wrote a member who made the move to Sintra, Portugal.
