"When visiting Dumaguete, Philippines, it's important to respect local customs and traditions to avoid any cultural faux pas. Firstly, avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, and personal income. Filipinos are generally polite and non-confrontational, and these topics can lead to uncomfortable situations. Secondly, don't disrespect elders. In Filipino culture, elders are highly respected. Always use polite forms of address, such as "po" and "opo", when speaking to someone older. Thirdly, don't refuse food or invitations to eat. Filipinos are known for their hospitality and it's considered rude to turn down an offer of food or an invitation to a meal. Fourthly, avoid public displays of anger or frustration. Filipinos value harmony and prefer to resolve conflicts in a peaceful manner. Public displays of anger can be seen as disrespectful and embarrassing. Fifthly, don't forget to remove your shoes when entering someone's home. This is a common practice in many Asian cultures, including the Philippines. Lastly, avoid being overly touchy or intimate in public. While Filipinos are generally warm and friendly, public displays of affection are not as common and can be seen as inappropriate," remarked another expat who made the move to Dumaguete , Philippines.
