As a foreigner living in Eastbourne, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Eastbourne if they have access to public healthcare in Eastbourne. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Eastbourne, you will have access to public healthcare, provided by the National Health Service (NHS). The NHS is a comprehensive system that provides a wide range of health services, including doctor's appointments, hospital treatment, and emergency care. The quality of care is generally high, with a strong emphasis on patient safety and evidence-based practice. However, like any public healthcare system, it can sometimes be overstretched, leading to long waiting times for non-emergency procedures. In terms of access, you will need to register with a local GP (General Practitioner) who will be your first point of contact for most health issues. They can refer you to specialists if needed. Prescription medications are also provided through the NHS, with a standard charge for each item, although there are exemptions for certain groups, such as children, pregnant women, and people with specific long-term conditions. Dental care is also available, but it is not fully covered by the NHS and you may have to pay a portion of the cost. Overall, the UK's public healthcare system is designed to ensure that everyone has access to the care they need, regardless of their ability to pay. As a foreigner, you may need to pay an immigration health surcharge as part of your visa application, which will give you access to the NHS on the same basis as a UK resident," explained one expat living in Eastbourne, England.
