As a foreigner living in Lille, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Lille if they have access to public healthcare in Lille. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Lille, you will have access to public healthcare. France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. It is a universal service providing healthcare for every citizen, regardless of wealth, age, or social status. The French healthcare system is a mix of public and private providers. The public healthcare system is funded by the government through taxes. It covers a large portion of the cost of most healthcare services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and medications. However, it does not cover the full cost of these services, so many people also have private health insurance to cover the remaining costs. The quality of care in France is generally very high. Hospitals are well-equipped, and doctors are highly trained. Most doctors in France speak English, so language should not be a barrier to receiving care. In terms of access, you will need to register with the French healthcare system and get a health insurance card, known as a Carte Vitale. This card will allow you to access healthcare services and be reimbursed for a portion of the costs. Pharmacies are widely available throughout Lille and the rest of France. They are typically open during normal business hours, and some are open 24 hours. Emergency care is available 24/7 at hospitals throughout the country. In an emergency, you can dial 112 to reach the emergency services. Overall, the French healthcare system is comprehensive and accessible, providing high-quality care to all residents, including foreigners," wrote a member who made the move to Lille, France.
