As a foreigner living in Gimpo, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Gimpo if they have access to public healthcare in Gimpo. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Gimpo, you will have access to public healthcare. The Korean healthcare system is universal and mandatory for all residents, including foreigners who have been living in the country for more than six months. The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) is the main public healthcare provider, offering a wide range of medical services at a relatively low cost. The quality of healthcare in Korea is high, with modern facilities and well-trained medical professionals. Many doctors and nurses speak English, especially in larger cities and hospitals. The system is efficient, with short waiting times for treatments and procedures. However, it's important to note that while the NHIS covers a significant portion of healthcare costs, it doesn't cover everything. Some treatments and medications may require out-of-pocket payment. Additionally, dental care and certain specialized treatments may not be fully covered. In terms of mental health services, while they are available, there can be a stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues in Korea. This can make it more challenging for foreigners to access these services. Overall, while the healthcare system in Korea is generally good, it's recommended that foreigners also have comprehensive health insurance to cover any additional costs," remarked another expat who made the move to Gimpo, Korea.
