Victoria has a mild climate and good road conditions, so any type of car would be suitable. However, if you plan on exploring the surrounding areas, which include mountains and rugged terrain, an SUV or a car with good ground clearance might be a better choice.
3. Parking Situation
Finding parking in downtown Victoria can be a bit challenging, especially during peak hours or during special events. However, there are numerous parking garages available. The cost of parking can vary, but it's generally affordable. Some residential areas require a permit for street parking.
4. Driving with an International License
Yes, you can drive with an international license in British Columbia, which includes Victoria, for up to six months. However, if you are planning on staying longer, you will need to get a British Columbia driver's license.
5. Getting a Local Driver's License
If you are moving to Victoria and plan on staying for more than six months, you will need to get a local driver's license. You can do this by visiting an ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia) driver licensing office. You will need to bring identification, proof of residence, and your current driver's license. You may also need to pass a knowledge test and a road test, depending on your home country's reciprocal licensing agreement with Canada.
6. Familiarize Yourself with Local Traffic Laws
Before you start driving in Victoria, make sure you familiarize yourself with local traffic laws. This includes understanding road signs, speed limits, and rules for turning and merging. Remember, in Canada, we drive on the right-hand side of the road.
7. Be Prepared for Roundabouts
