Can anyone enlighten me about the driving requirements? They are frequently lumped under "Senza Patente", but that may be misleading, as some sights indicate an AM patente is required. I am already enrolled in my Patente B class, looking for an interim solution. Is the AM easier and faster to obtain than the B?
Also, if anyone can weigh in on the different brands that would be helpful. thank you, liz

Hello, True my "Preparazione Globale" 2013 driving book is older but if you look c. Chapter 20, page c. 306...it lists all the different patenti. i.e. AM is for motor scooters and ape (3 wheels) and no faster than 45K/hr...so not the same as a car license. If you do not have the book yet (c. 26E) buy it right away...has lots of the exams in the back which you must pass consistently before even trying to take your exam for the pink permit (before you take the c. 10 street lessons) Also practice taking the online exams...we literally took 100's.... http://www.rmastri.it/quiz-patente-b.php You may legally drive in Italy with your US license for 1yr and yes you may buy a car as soon as you get residency w/o Italian license. If you do not have an Italian license after that 1 yr. mark any car insurance you have could be void in an incidenti. You can do it...we had to translate the whole book and it was work for almost a whole year and we are certainly not fluent and driving Italian is very different from speaking Italian...you just work a little every day. Good Luck! If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Yes i am in auto scuolaa for my B license already for three months so I have all the books and tests already and am very familiar with all of it, including the limits of my US license. My question is do I NEED a license for a Microcar or not?

I think so...AM probably...look up the chapter it should explain each license and what it is for. Is a microcar under 45K/hr and cilindrata less than 50cm? Also patente B1 is for non leggeri (not light) quadricicli (looks like a dune buggy) and will also include driving anything under the AM class patente. You'd have to ask the instructor how to go about obtaining these other licenses. The chapter does state it is prohibited to drive w/o a license on a public street. Good luck
