If I am not mistaken, to buy a car in Italy you must be a resident? My wife and I won't to start our retirement with a year in Italy, but it looks like there are way to many hoops to jump through. So now we are planning just a 90 day visit, but we would like to have a car so we can see as much as possible. Is there such a thing as leasing a car for just 3 months?

Renault a Peugeot have short lease programs. You pick the car up at selected airports and drive it for the time you need it and then return it to one of the airports on the list. You need to sign up ahead of time. You also have the option of buying a European car in the United States and picking it up at the factory, say BMW. Then when your done the car is shipped to the USA. If your going to Sicily, there is a long term rental, drive Sicily, that is inexpensive compared to most.

You can also go directly to the car rental website such as Hertz, Avis, etc or try a booking company such as https://www.autoeurope.com
Depending on the size you are looking for you can get a car for 3 months with full insurance around $500-$600 per month.

Through AutoEurope you can lease a Peugeot, brand new, full warranty, two drivers, full insurance. The pick up is either Rome or Milan airports.
By the way, you could actually spend just short of 6 months of a year in Italy as long as you were willing to leave the Schengen region for 3 months and then come back. However, if you stay the full 90 days, you won't be able to reenter for 6 months. Conversely, if you stay less than 90 days, you can reenter sooner.

France has a one year visa. You can get that and then travel to Italy as you please.

Sergios, thanks for the link, it does seem like it's easier to get a one year visitor visa from France, and I can still spend lots of time in Italy.

Hi ravensfan. Yes the French tourist 12 month visa is a lot easier as Italy does not have a 12 month visa. For France you will need to provide evidence of health insurance ( for 12 months) financials and proof of accommodation.,and in your case an FBI check. If you require more info you can pm me as this is what we are applying for next year.

Hi ravensfam again. You can only spend 90 days out of France and if you are plan to leave France during the 12 months you must provide evidence of where you are going. Best to say on your visa application you are staying in France and once your visa is approved then go to Italy.
