Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center can be quite expensive, while outside the city center, it is relatively cheaper. The cost of utilities such as electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage is also moderate. Groceries in La Rochelle can be pricey, with items such as bread, milk, eggs, fruits, and vegetables costing more than in other parts of France. Eating out at restaurants can also be costly, especially in tourist areas. Public transportation in La Rochelle is reasonably priced, with various options available including buses, bikes, and boats. However, owning and maintaining a car can be expensive due to high fuel prices and parking fees. Healthcare in La Rochelle is of high quality but can be expensive if you are not covered by French social security or private health insurance. Overall, while the cost of living in La Rochelle can be high compared to other cities in France, it offers a high quality of life with its beautiful scenery, rich history, and vibrant culture," explained one expat.
