What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Lausanne?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Lausanne about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to understand that Switzerland has a high standard of healthcare, so you can expect excellent prenatal and postnatal care. However, it can be expensive, so make sure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity costs. Secondly, you should familiarize yourself with the Swiss healthcare system. In Switzerland, you have the choice between public and private hospitals. Public hospitals are less expensive but may not offer the same level of comfort and privacy as private ones. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife. They can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Fourthly, it's recommended to start looking for a pediatrician before the baby is born. Many pediatricians in Lausanne have long waiting lists, so it's best to secure one early. Fifthly, if you're not fluent in French, look for healthcare providers who speak your language. Communication is crucial during this time, and you want to make sure you fully understand everything. Sixthly, take advantage of the maternity and paternity leave policies in Switzerland. Mothers are entitled to 14 weeks of paid leave, and fathers are entitled to 2 weeks. Lastly, consider joining expat groups or parenting groups in Lausanne. They can provide valuable advice, support, and friendship during this exciting time in your life," remarked another expat who made the move to Lausanne, Switzerland.
