What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Enoshima?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Enoshima about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by health insurance, but there may be some out-of-pocket costs. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who speaks your native language. This can be a great help in navigating the healthcare system and ensuring you understand everything that's happening during your pregnancy and birth. Thirdly, make sure to find a hospital or birthing center that aligns with your birth plan. Some hospitals in Japan may have more traditional practices, while others may be more open to different birthing methods. Fourthly, take advantage of the local community. There are many support groups and resources for expat parents in Japan. These can be a great source of information and support during your pregnancy and after the birth of your baby. Fifthly, learn about the cultural norms and traditions surrounding childbirth in Japan. This can help you understand what to expect and how to navigate the system. Lastly, remember to take care of your mental health. Having a baby in a foreign country can be stressful, so it's important to take time for self-care and seek help if you're feeling overwhelmed," wrote a member who made the move to Enoshima, Japan.
