What are the most challenging aspects of retiring in Lake Chapala?

Answer this Question

We asked retirees what they find the most challenging about retiring in Lake Chapala. They wrote...

"One of the most challenging aspects of retiring in Lake Chapala is learning to navigate a different language and culture. Many of the locals speak Spanish, and getting by in a foreign language can be daunting. Additionally, much of the region is rural, so access to some amenities and services that are taken for granted in developed countries may not be as readily available. Finally, the cost of living in Mexico can vary greatly depending on where you live, so deciding on the right place to call home may be a challenge as well," wrote a member who made the move to Lake Chapala, Mexico.

"Getting mail! The mail system in Mexico is not great, or secure, so I need to rely on friends coming from the States to bring mail and packages. Receiving mail in other countries where I've lived has also posed a challenge in that forwarding mail is often quite expensive," explained one expat living in Lake Chapala, Mexico.
