What do I need to know before retiring in Amalfi Coast?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Amalfi Coast, they said...

"Expats considering retirement in the Amalfi Coast, should be aware of several important factors. Firstly, the cost of living can be quite high, especially in popular tourist areas. Housing can be expensive, and the cost of goods and services is generally higher than in other parts of Italy. Secondly, the healthcare system in Italy is of a high standard. Expats are eligible for the same healthcare benefits as Italian citizens, provided they are registered residents and have a health insurance card. Thirdly, the Amalfi Coast is a popular tourist destination, which means it can get crowded during peak tourist season. This can lead to increased prices and crowded public spaces. Fourthly, the Amalfi Coast is known for its hilly terrain and many steps, which may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. Fifthly, while many locals speak English, particularly in tourist areas, it is beneficial to learn some Italian to help with day-to-day living. Lastly, the Amalfi Coast has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. This can be a significant change for those used to a different climate. In terms of lifestyle, the Amalfi Coast offers a relaxed pace of life with a strong emphasis on food, family, and enjoying the outdoors. The region is known for its stunning natural beauty, historic sites, and delicious cuisine. However, it's important to note that while the Amalfi Coast offers a high quality of life, it may not offer the same level of convenience as a larger city. For example, shopping options may be limited, and public transportation can be less frequent and reliable than in larger cities. Finally, it's recommended to visit the Amalfi Coast for an extended period before deciding to retire there, to ensure it's a good fit for your lifestyle and expectations," wrote a member who made the move to Amalfi Coast, Italy.
