As a foreigner living in Szeged, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Szeged if they have access to public healthcare in Szeged. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Szeged, you will have access to public healthcare, provided you have the necessary insurance coverage. The healthcare system in Hungary is universal, meaning it is available to all residents, including foreigners. However, it is important to note that you must be a legal resident and contribute to the national health insurance fund to be eligible. The quality of healthcare in Hungary is generally good, with well-trained medical professionals and modern facilities. However, there might be a language barrier as not all healthcare professionals speak English. It's also worth noting that while basic healthcare is covered by the national insurance, certain treatments and medications might not be, so it's advisable to have additional private health insurance. In terms of emergency services, they are available and efficient. Pharmacies are well-stocked and can be found throughout the city. However, waiting times for non-emergency procedures can be long, and the standard of care can vary from hospital to hospital. Overall, while the Hungarian healthcare system has its challenges, as a foreigner with the necessary insurance, you should be able to access the care you need while living in Szeged," remarked another expat in Szeged, Hungary.
