As a foreigner living in Daegu, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Daegu if they have access to public healthcare in Daegu. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Daegu, you will have access to public healthcare. The Korean healthcare system is universal and mandatory for all residents, including foreigners. It is funded by a compulsory National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme that covers a large portion of the treatment costs. The healthcare in Korea is of a high standard, with modern hospitals and clinics equipped with the latest technology. The doctors and medical staff are highly trained, and many of them speak English. The public healthcare system covers a wide range of services, including general practice, specialist consultations, surgeries, and prescription medications. However, it's important to note that not all medical services are covered by the NHI. Some treatments and medications may require out-of-pocket payment. Also, while the quality of care is generally high, you may experience longer waiting times in public hospitals compared to private ones. In addition to the public healthcare system, there are also private hospitals and clinics in Daegu. These often offer faster service and more comfortable facilities, but at a higher cost. Many foreigners choose to take out private health insurance to cover these additional costs. Overall, the healthcare system in Daegu, like the rest of Korea, is well-regarded and accessible to foreigners. However, it's recommended to familiarize yourself with the specifics of the system and consider additional private insurance for more comprehensive coverage," said a member in Daegu, Korea.
