how hard to get a job in milan??

need some speedy help here.
I've been offered a position in milan
(current residence: los angeles).
I would very much like my significant other of 7 years to join me there, but we hear it's extremely difficult for americans to get work in italy. also, he doesn't speak italian. and... well... we hear milan's not quite paris as far as being a pleasurable place to live if you're not working.
can this marriage be saved??
would love any thoughts, advice, job leads, stories from those in a similar boat, etc.
