Over 65? Use Your Cédula for Discounts

View/Add Comments (0 Comments) |

Starting about 2 years ago in Costa Rica, new residents received a new version of the residency cédula (ID card) that is called DIMEX. In the lower right corner in red letters are the words: Documento de Identidad Migratorio para Extranjeros. If you are 65 or over, a DIMEX card entitles you to a number of discounts including reduced bus fares (intra and intercity), National Parks admission and admission into public museums. Businesses may also give you discounts. You can also use your DIMEX card to get a Caja Gold Card (Caja is the gov't health insurance/social security agency), which will also give you many discounts. For instance, showing your Gold Card on buses gets you a free ride.

I'm on my third career in life that of being voluntarily unemployed! The first two were house construction and later hi-tech as a software engineer. I was fortunate to be able to retire early in Costa Rica back in '07. With my wife and younger son we bought land and built a dream house with that million-dollar view you hear so much about. We spend time raising coffee, bananas, and fruit trees. My wife is an accomplished artist and has discovered new media to express herself here including beautiful ceramic mosaics. Pura vida! P.S. Now, in 2021, planning our next move ... to México!
