Parent's Review of College du Leman in Geneva, Switzerland

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

College du Leman

In what town or city is this school located?

Geneva

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre K-13

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

I actually graduated from CDL in 1976, but am now a parent. I remember that several students in the high school rode motor bikes and rode busses and parents. Of course boarding students or "Interns" live in the dorms where a whole culture exixts as well.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

We had great soccer and volley ball teams. The 10 day school ski trip to the mountains is highly anticipated. wonderful theater productions. I believ that the school has since expanded to be more inclusive of other activities.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

We had reunions years later in the states and several Americans indicated that while we were all American it was challenging to find common ground after returning to the states with other kids our age. However acceptance of living within a diversified student body has served us well. Our school reunions are richly represented by all nationalities, religions and cultures. We are all strongly connected by our common experience in Geneva. Many get together regularily within their cities of CDL students whether they attended at the same time or not.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Parents were not a huge part back in the 70's.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Keep an open mind. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the different cultures of the world and embrace the differences. Try different foods, learn some of the languages, understand the differnt holidays and celebrations. (I remember Ramadan when the girls in the dorm all knew which direction their room faced toward Mecca and they used prayer rugs.) We used to hear the native music and one girl showed us how to belly dance !)We learned how to speak English with different accents (french accent, german accent, Farsi inflections, Japanese)
