How many countries (other than your home country) have you lived in as a retiree?

none

What have been the most challenging aspects of being retired abroad?

Missing family and friends.

What have been the most rewarding aspects of being retired abroad?

Healthier and better quality of life. Lower cost of living.

What would you do differently if you were just starting the retire abroad process?

Nothing.

What is life like for a retiree in your city and its surroundings? (Is there an active expat community? Cultural Attractions? Recreation? Nightlife?)

I am in a small town in the Andes. There is a pretty big expat community. People have number of activities to explore, from hiking, horse back riding, yoga classes, games with other expats to involvement to help local kids learn English, create community gardens and produce organic food. In nearby Loja there are theaters, concerts, museums, arts to explore.

What residency documents or visas did you need to obtain to retire in your host country? How difficult was this process? (Please describe)

Ecuador has a Pensioner's Visa which is easy to obtain with Social Security statement (min. $800 a month income), FBI and police reports. The process is not difficult and there are many attorneys and facilitators who can help. But it can be done personally too.

Did you buy a home or apartment, or rent one? Is this a difficult process? (Please describe)

Lots of rental and for sale properties everywhere. I rent an apartment. In smaller towns like mine people don't even sign any rental agreements and it is convenient to rent from month to month.

Financially, has living abroad in your host country met your expectations? Exceeded them?

Yes, I live on much less than I would have to spend in the US. Living expenses are much lower. I can safe some money for future travels.

What are the most important financial considerations for retiring to your host country?

Cost of living and healthcare expenses.

How much can a retiree live on comfortably in your host country?

One person can live on around $1000 a month, a couple on $1500 but it also depends on the area and personal needs.

Do you have access to quality medical care? (Please describe - is it close? Expensive?)

There is a notional healthcare system called IESS where anyone can apply, pay around $80 a month and have healthcare. Also, many private insurance plans are available with access to quality private hospitals. The costs of medical services are much lower than in the US. An average simple surgery like hernia, appendectomy or varicose veins for example cost around $1500. Office visit with a specialist: $30 to $40.

Yes, fiber optic is even available in some villages and moving to more remote areas.
