Describe how you "dreamed" expat life would be before you moved overseas. Please provide as much detail as possible.

I ran an international real estate company in Downtown Chicago. I always loved traveling for my job to different countries. I especially enjoyed the awesome weather in most of the areas I traveled to. I wanted to live somewhere that was like summer year round. I studied different countries before making a decision. Ecuador rated in the top five and I went there first. I fell in love with the people, the weather and the costs.

How has your expat experience met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?

My experience has surpassed what I thought it would be like living overseas. I opened up a business and it has been very fulfilling. I meet people from all over the world on a daily basis and absolutely love the weather. While you learn quickly that everything is not available...electronics are way too expensive here...things have gotten better every year in regards to just about everything. I love to see entire families outside of my balcony enjoying being together.

How has your expat experience NOT met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?

I was never part of a small town. Salinas is often like a Peyton Place. Everybody knows everyone's business and has no problem talking about it. On the other hand, if you get sick or need help with something, there are 15 or more people willing to jump in and help... just like in a small town. I didn't expect that and have enjoyed it for the most part.
