An Expat Talks about Living in
May 12, 2020
An expat in Ecuador talks about what she had expected life to be like vs. the reality of living in Salinas. She enjoys life in Salinas and appreciates the family-oriented culture, the beautiful weather and running her own business. Salinas has a small town feel where everybody knows what's going on in your life, but the positive side of that is that 15 people jump in and help if you are sick or need help.
What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?
Describe how you "dreamed" expat life would be before you moved overseas. Please provide as much detail as possible.
I ran an international real estate company in Downtown Chicago. I always loved traveling for my job to different countries. I especially enjoyed the awesome weather in most of the areas I traveled to. I wanted to live somewhere that was like summer year round. I studied different countries before making a decision. Ecuador rated in the top five and I went there first. I fell in love with the people, the weather and the costs.
How has your expat experience met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?
My experience has surpassed what I thought it would be like living overseas. I opened up a business and it has been very fulfilling. I meet people from all over the world on a daily basis and absolutely love the weather. While you learn quickly that everything is not available...electronics are way too expensive here...things have gotten better every year in regards to just about everything. I love to see entire families outside of my balcony enjoying being together.
How has your expat experience NOT met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?
I was never part of a small town. Salinas is often like a Peyton Place. Everybody knows everyone's business and has no problem talking about it. On the other hand, if you get sick or need help with something, there are 15 or more people willing to jump in and help... just like in a small town. I didn't expect that and have enjoyed it for the most part.

I'd say if you are retired and wanting a nice beach area where the views are exceptional. Yes this maybe the place for you. But there are many cities along the coast that you may like better.
