Summary: If you're thinking about relocating to Cyprus but haven't decided on a particular city or town yet, taking a discovery trip to explore several sought-after expat locales can offer valuable perspectives. Check out these recommended destinations for your exploratory journey in Cyprus.

Embarking on a Look-See trip to Cyprus is an essential step for anyone considering relocating to this beautiful island. Such a trip allows potential expats to explore various cities and towns, get a feel for the local culture, and assess the practicalities of living in Cyprus. It's an opportunity to envision your daily life in different locales, from the bustling streets of major cities to the tranquil vibes of coastal towns. By visiting in person, you can gather invaluable insights that go beyond what you can learn from research alone—such as the warmth of the community, the pace of life, and the nuances of the local real estate market.

Recommended Itineraries

For a 10-day trip, consider starting in the capital, Nicosia, for a couple of days to experience the urban lifestyle, followed by visits to the coastal cities of Limassol and Paphos. Each city warrants a two-day exploration. Dedicate a day each to the smaller towns of Larnaca and Famagusta to understand the diversity of living options. If you have 20 days, extend your stay in each city to fully immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. Add the Troodos Mountains to your itinerary for a taste of Cyprus's natural beauty and explore the villages of Platres and Kakopetria. Also, consider spending a few days in the less frequented, picturesque regions of Polis and the Karpas Peninsula to discover more serene and potentially rewarding living environments.

Nicosia

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is a vibrant city that offers a mix of modern amenities and rich history. With a population of over 200,000, it's the largest city on the island and serves as its financial and business hub. Expats and digital nomads are drawn to Nicosia for its cultural diversity, bustling café culture, and the availability of international schools. The cost of living is reasonable, and the city's central location provides easy access to other parts of Cyprus.

Travel Tip: While in Nicosia, visit the Cyprus Museum to delve into the island's history or enjoy a meal at Piatsa Gourounaki for authentic Cypriot cuisine.

Limassol

Limassol is Cyprus's second-largest city and is known for its cosmopolitan seafront, dynamic business sector, and rich cultural scene. It's a favorite among expats for its high quality of life, with a population of around 100,000. The city boasts a beautiful marina, a range of international dining options, and is close to some of the island's best beaches. Limassol is also popular with retirees for its relaxed pace of life and with digital nomads for its growing startup scene.

Travel Tip: Take a stroll along the Limassol Marina and stop by the Limassol Castle, which houses the Medieval Museum of Cyprus.

Paphos

Paphos, a coastal city in the southwest, is renowned for its archaeological sites and has a UNESCO World Heritage status. With a smaller population of about 35,000, it offers a slower pace of life, making it attractive for retirees and those seeking a more laid-back lifestyle. The cost of living is generally lower than in Limassol and Nicosia, and the city has a strong expat community. Paphos is also a gateway to outdoor activities with its proximity to the Akamas Peninsula.

Travel Tip: Don't miss the Paphos Archaeological Park, which features ruins from the Roman period, including well-preserved mosaics.

Larnaca

Larnaca is a charming city on the southern coast of Cyprus, known for its palm-tree-lined promenade and the stunning Salt Lake. It has a population of around 50,000 and offers a blend of traditional and modern living. The cost of living is affordable, and the city is popular among expats for its relaxed atmosphere and community feel. Larnaca is also conveniently located near the island's main airport.

Travel Tip: Visit the Church of Saint Lazarus, a remarkable example of Byzantine architecture, and enjoy the local flavors at To Kazani Traditional Tavern.

Famagusta

Famagusta, located on the east coast of Cyprus, is an area rich in history and culture. The region includes the modern city of Famagusta itself, as well as the ancient city of Salamis and the ghost town of Varosha. Expats are often drawn to the region for its beautiful beaches and the lower cost of living compared to the larger cities. The area is also becoming increasingly popular with digital nomads seeking a quieter base with natural beauty.

Travel Tip: Explore the ancient ruins of Salamis for a journey back in time, and enjoy fresh seafood at Protaras Fish Restaurant.

Troodos Mountains

The Troodos Mountains offer a refreshing escape from the coastal cities, with picturesque villages like Platres and Kakopetria nestled among the pine-clad slopes. The region is ideal for those who love nature and prefer a cooler climate. The cost of living is lower in the mountains, and the area is known for its wine production and outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing in the winter. The Troodos region provides a tranquil setting for expats looking to enjoy Cyprus's natural beauty.

Travel Tip: Visit the Kykkos Monastery, one of the most famous and richest monasteries in Cyprus, and sample traditional Cypriot dishes at Mylos Restaurant in Kakopetria.
