work visa from brazil

I have a similar situation to the post titled "work visa". As I am new to this forum, I was not sure if a post on that thread would bump the topic, so sorry for the duplicate question. I am currently living in Brazil, here on a Vitem II from an American company. I have been asked to stay and work for a Brazilian based company and would like to know if it is possible to obtain a work visa from Brazil? The other string had a reply that stated that this was possible, but the visa would be issued from the US? I do not understand this. My information so far tells me this visa requires a request from the Brazilian company to the Brazilian government. Ok, this is not a problem. Once the letter of approval has been obtained, where would I go to change the visa type? All the information I can find tells me to go to the Brazilian consulate in the US with my original passport. I can mail my request and passport, but can not send my passport to the US from Brazil as I am required to have it with me all the time. Any help is greatly appreciated as I would like to stay without the need to fly back to the US, only to turn around and fly back here.
