Crime in the NE- Fortz, Natal, Pipa, Joao Pessoa, Recife -what is it ?

I lived in the NE in the past and it was a great place to live.
Now I hear stories that it isn't so any longer; crime even in places like Pipa that was unheard of years ago.
Just what is going on and who are these people ?
I did hear that a big convicted drug dealer from Porto Alegre got transferred to Fortaleza and his gang moved up there with him.
Is it the main cause of the crime ?

Of course RIO has been RE-taken over by the drug gangs, after some peace during the World Cup and Olympics, some even say they were paid off to behave during this time.

And why hasn't the new govt and president done a thing about all this crime they campaigned against ? Rumors are that they too were paid off by the drug gangs and they even voted in the new govt.

Brasil seems a mess in all but a few places. Why can't a country with all these police and an Army get a handle on this crime ?

Is Brasil doomed for failure and the exodus of it's people ? Most of the Brasilians I know plan to get out as soon as they can; to the US, Portugal Canada or wherever.

I been living in Brazil for over 4 years. Not had any problems but there was a murder two block from my house three weeks ago. It was gang related I been told. Person shot standing in his door of his house. This said what’s happening in the other places mentioned is also not going well. The US is in a Civil War with a cleaning up the corruption of the Democrats and Obama. The liberals Democrats are pushing illegals invasion. Europe is having a Muslim killing Christian and as being invaded by Muslims. France has over 4 million Muslims and more coming.. Portugal and Spain are stopping Brazilian from entering a friend was just stop from entering Spain to go to Portugal at Spain Airport had to return to Brazil and she has been there before.. There doesn’t seem to be anyplace that much better. The only advantage in the US there are jobs.

In a few words:

- NE states are still ruled by socialists that despises persecuting criminals and, instead, insists that they must be resocialized in freedom. The policeman that hurts or -- worse -- kill criminals (even in legitimate defense) may face jail.
The new government loose elections in NE states, they won because South and Southeast voted massively on them.

- "why hasn't the new govt and president done a thing about all this?"

Well, they are. But they depend on Congress to pass a bill removing privileges from convicts and assuring that policemen and civilians won't be prosecuted if they defend themselves (or someone else ) or their property from criminals.

Despite this, homicides declined 25% in this years first two months (see below). This is why policemen are feeling more confident in their actions against criminals who, on the other hand, are becoming afraid of law enforcement people.

7 weeks ago I had just dropped my wife off in Pipa Central so that she could walk up to one of our favorite restaurants to reserve us a table while I parked the car. While waiting for a taxi stopped in the middle of the road in front of me to me move........an unknown (to me) male walked up to my side of the car, kicked the left rear door and immediately reached inside and attempted to pull me out of the drivers window by the hair of my head! I've lived in Sao Paulo for 5 years and 4 more in Pipa and never a problem. But I had my Police extendable metal ASP baton between the seats and I immediately grabbed it, struck the guy's arm and then extended it and struck him in his right eye with the baton. The taxi in front of me saw what was happening and moved which allowed me to drive down the street several blocks and park. I exited the car to get my wife and I placed the collapsed ASP under my left arm. I found my wife and began walking back to the car when a parking control agent began yelling to me to "Run!" I looked behind me to see this same assailant running toward me with a baseball bat in hand! Although I still go to the gym, at 65 years old I can no longer run. As I did a slow trot, I watched Silvio Ney close the distance to within bat striking range and then wheeled around with the now extended ASP and struck him so hard on this left arm that the impact knocked the ASP from my sweaty hand. As I retrieved the ASP I saw 3 men grab Silvio Ney and held him down while shouting for me to get my wife and leave. My wife and I walked to a near-by restaurant to call the police only to be told that I should walk to the police station to file the report. After some minutes we convinced them to come to me; They did.........45 minutes later! 7 weeks later this man is still walking the streets and has since assaulted 2 other people..........the towns people are deathly afraid of this former Civil Police Officer. Silvio Ney was a former police officer who was fired for being too violent! Why is crime increasing in Brazil and why doesn't the government do something? Brazil is broke! The criminal justice system is broke! In Brazil the offenders have more rights than their victims and in many cases the same criminals, walking around free after committing crimes, are committing more crimes and terrifying more Brazilians and foreigners alike! Silvio Ney found my parked car that same night and for 10 minutes he beat that car to death with his baseball bat. When he was done there was over $31,000.00 in damage to me car. The Civil Police suggested that I file a civil law suit as they did not move to include this damage as part of the criminal charge! If you come to Pipa.........be aware of this guy! He is crazy, violent and attacks without warning!

I guess that is my point, WHY LIVE HERE at all ? It's not worth it.
I left in 2008 and have visited twice since and it's nothing like it was back in those days.

Yes you are right, Brasil is totally broke.
So why do the drug gangs flourish ?

My advice is - Come back in 10 years to see if anything has improved OR move to a country that doesn't have these problems, like Portugal.
For americans even Mexico sems to be an improvement.

Would you put up with these kinds of things in the US, not for a minute.
Brasil is out of control and loosing the battle to be a real democracy.

Brasil16
You are not quite correct in some of your ideas.
Where are you from and what brought you to Brasil ?

ALL immigrants to the US, illegal and otherwise have been allowed for 50 years because why ? Because the RICH owners of businesses NEED them to do work NO American wants to do and to work for pennies on the dollar.
For example ; working in poultry factories processing dead animals / picking fruit in the field / being nannies / landscaping / for rich people.
More than once people in certain states ran off Mexicans because they were anti-immigrant. What happend ? When it came time to pick their fruit, there was NO ONE to do it and the fruit dropped to the ground and rotted. Farmers lost MILLIONS of dollars because they decided against these Mexicans who helped them MAKE MONEY for years and years. Pretty stupid. Mexicans headed to northern cities like Chicago, NY and got real jobs, not slave labor jobs.

There is NO civil war going on in the US. Uneducated poor whites are anti-black and anti-immigrant because they are being replaced by smarter more educated smarter immigrants and blacks. These whites are at the bottom of the US society and not happy about it, and racists too. Ignorant and uneducated.

Democratic corruption ? What in the world are you talking about ? I think you've been watching FOX fake news too much.
Furthermore, OBAMA did more to promote education and better living conditions for everyone.
OBAMA did more for the US to advance our standing in the world, where as trump has destroyed more treaties, mostly from OBAMA because trump was HUMILIATED by OBAMA at the press party at the WH in fun but trump never forgot it. trump is truly a sick psychopath narcissist that needs to be removed.
He will be gone soon thank GOD.

I've never seen the police hold back going after crimminals ...
In fact the cops I know are pretty aggressive. They are ready for anything and not afraid to act.

In one car jacking in Recife, a condo porteiro saw it happening, got the license plate of the car being stolen, called it in and the cops had the car in 10 minutes. Another one somewhere else in the city, the cops ended up shooting the thief right there on the street.

So, don't tell me the cops are afraid of doing their job. Brasilians police have just the opposite reputation, of being TOO violent. BUT they know how to do their job. 10X more for the Federal Police.

Crazy world traveler. I see you are a liberal from your statements. First when was the last time you were in the USA. I suggest you go to San Francisco or Los Angeles to see your wonderful Democrats at work. These cities have now brought back the rats infested with Diseases. Your ideology that Obama was a wonderful President is all falling apart. He will be on trial for treason in the near future. His corrupt government is now been exposed and the USA is having one of the worse crisis on the south boarder in years. There are 100,000 people trying to come into the USA a month illegally. Your old argument that illegals are doing job America wouldn’t take is false. Your right business were using them for cheap labor but that changing because they are now hiring America citizens and paying the wages they are supposed to. I challenge you to go to the walkaway Facebook Page see real people stories why they are leaving the Democrats party so you can stop watching CNN and MSNBC. If you want to talk fact I more than happy to discuss them. My feelings won’t be included just facts. Have a good day

pensadenos -
sounds like you could have needed a tazer for this guy
Not sure if they are legal to carry here.
Even then, would you put up with this in the states ? Not for a second.

For the last 10 years, after the good years here in Brasil ended, foreigners have been running from Brasil in droves, mostly because of the out of control crime here that the govt will not do anything about.
A mass exedous not only of foreigners but Brasilians too. Brasilians dream of living in the US, Canada, Portugal, Spain etc.

Many stories I hear is that the politicians are in bed with the drug dealers because that is where the money is ! Even retired cops in RIO are joining forces with them because the pay is good.

How do you fix a society like this ? I don't think it can be done.

Brazil16: Why don't we stick with what this website is all about and keep the USA politics out of our discussions. Had I known you were going to highjack the discussion from Brazil crime issues to turning it into an anti-obama campaign I would have never replied.

I agree Brazil is my home I am trying to help Brazil to recycle there waste in garbage. I have lived in Argentina also and Mexico to give me a big prospect of the potential of Brazil. If you want a peaceful city there are still many to choose. I am in one of them in the North.

I am sorry to hear that. It sounds traumatic. But rest assured people like that do not end up well. Have you ever heard the song "Bad Bad Leroy Brown".

Well, he will bounce up on the wrong person and meet his maker I am sure of it. That type of craziness never goes unchecked my friend.

Glad you and your wife is safe though.
He sounds mentally ill.
