Englishman Moving To Medellin

Evening All,

I'm new to this forum so I expect I'm asking the same questions as everyone else, but I'm moving to Medellin from London around the turn of the year and I'd be very grateful for advice on a few things.

My background is that I am 32, single, no kids. I'm a lawyer although I don't expect to work in the legal sector in Colombia. My Spanish is mediocre at the moment - I can only hold a slow and basic conversation - but I'm hoping that will have improved significantly by the time I arrive. I'm planning to stay for up to six months on the tourist visa but wouldn't rule out longer if the right opportunity arose.

Specific areas I'm hoping for advice on:

1. Recommendations for areas to live. I visited Medellin last year for a few days but did not get a good look around residential areas. I'd like to stay in a nice neighborhood but ideally a bit less touristy than El Poblado.

2. Any recommendations for work would be great. As I said I don't expect legal work but I'm open to anything within reason, and obviously not being an 18 y/o backpacker I'm hard-working and reliable.

3. I'd love to join a football (soccer) team. Anyone play out there?
