Reality Check Please

my question to this forum is am I just 'what if' ing myself out of fear of ending up dead broke in columbia? I need to work as I have little savings. so how did you all finally pull the trigger? I want to stop dreaming and get on a plane but I don't want to do anything in a foolish way. Perhaps someone can tell me how they planned their move? Here is a little about me and my family and our life at the moment.
I have had a desire to move to Columbia for some time now. I live in NY state at the moment and have numerous obligations which make it difficult for me to even plan when I can make this move. Mostly my lack of finances concern me. If I knew 100% I could support myself and my family I would go today. I have a 13 year old I would like to expose to the culture I have always been enamored with. I am 48, my wife is 55. My son and I speak very very little spanish but are learning. I don't think my wife shares my passion for living abroad. She and I seem to come up with 1,000 reason not to do anything like this (she likes NY very much, I am sick of NY) I see her point on a great many of her objections to living abroad but like many problems in life many of these concerns can be solved with $$$ too bad we are not well off and mostly live month to month. I feel like I would be happier living month to month in Columbia. LOL (Side Question) I had heard that I could learn to teach english and get by ok on that salary. is that true? by the way I have a BS in business not sure if that will help me in Columbia or not. Thanks for any input, advice or story you would like to share.
