Health Insurance for Expats

Hello all --

My spouse and I are part-timers in Envigado. I'm 51 and own my own business that can operate without me for decent periods of time. He's 39 and a naturalized US citizen from Colombia.

We're no ready at this point actually move to Colombia full-time but we own a house (have utility bills, etc.) and spend probably 4 months of the year in Colombia. In July I obtained my spousal cedula and TP 10 visa.

Recently we bought health insurance that my husband tells me is specifically for hospitalization (catastophic I guess you'd say), but he tells me that the agent told him that we couldn't buy HMO style health insurance unless we're in the country 181 days a year and that they might actually check our passports to confirm.

My husband is not as sophisticated with the issues as one might hope and my Spanish just isn't to the point of understanding everything that's going on when people don't speak slowly or enunciate well. He tends to accept the first answer someone gives him and not pursue the issue.

Sorry for the long-winded wind-up, but my question is: Is this true? It just doesn't sound right and I've spoken in the past to at least one person who used to live in Bogota and moved to Panama but kept his insurance.
