Trip Report: Puracé

Long story short, a friend at Javeriana called my a few weeks ago saying the USGS was looking for a photographer to help in a survey of the snow cover on the volcano Puracé. A few scratchy phone calls and I was in. Met Dr. Ravinindra (Ravi) and his wife, Heidi in Popayan (get the impression the three of us are going to stand out?) and went in their fancy USGS Land Rover up to the volcano. Luckily, another team was measuring snow depth. Our job was to document snow cover area to compare with the last survey 3 years ago.

3 days on the site, one with weather too bad to do any work, and I'm in love with the place. It is spectacular country. I was too busy doing the infrared photography for the cover measurements that I didn't have time to load any of my own film so I'll be back soon to make my own images.

BTW, Rav said it was very evident without analyzing any of the data that the snow cover has drastically smaller and thinner. They joked a lot about being in a "high risk" study and expected to be fired any day. Said they turn all their raw data over to relevant agencies in host countries just in case.
